Configuring Your Device for ISP Connectivity

  1. On your Palm-size PC or Handheld PC, tap the Start button and choose Programs.

  2. Tap Communications from the menu.

  3. Tap Connections. On a Handheld PC, tap Remote Networking.

  4. Double-tap the Make New Connection icon.

  5. In the Type a name for the connection text box, type the name of your ISP (Ex. AT&T WorldNet).

  6. Select Dial-Up Connection.
  7. Tap the Next button.
  8. From the Select a modem list, choose the your modem. In this example the Xircom-CompactCard_Modem_56G is used. If you do not see your modem in the list, be sure to firmly insert the modem into the Compact Flash or PCMCIA slot. Also, if you have a modem built into your device, it should show in the modem list as Built-In Modem on COMx, where x is a number from 1-6.

  9. Tap the Configure button.

  10. Select the appropriate baud rate for your modem. If your modem is 56K, choose 57600 for the baud rate. Always choose the closest baud rate above your actual modem speed. Most ISPs require the default settings as shown above.
  11. On the menu bar, tap the OK button.
  12. Tap the TCP/IP Settings button.
  13. Server-assigned IP address should be checked.

  14. Use Slip should be unchecked.
  15. Use software compression should be checked. (In general for most ISPs, this setting is checked. Refer to your ISP or the list accompanying this article.)
  16. Use IP header compression should be checked. (In general for most ISPs, this setting is checked. Refer to your ISP or the list accompanying this article.)
  17. Tap the Name Servers tab.

  18. Server-assigned addresses should be unchecked.
  19. In the DNS: text box, type 204.127.129.1 – if AT&T WorldNet is your ISP.
    1. (This number is specific to your ISP. Check with your ISP for this information, or check with the list accompanying this article.)

  20. In the Alt DNS: text box, type 204.127.160.1 – if AT&T WorldNet is your ISP.
    1. (This number is specific to your ISP. Check with your ISP for this information, or check with the list accompanying this article.)

  21. Keep the WINS text box, set at 0.0.0.0
  22. Keep the Alt WINS text box, set at 0.0.0.0
  23. On the menu bar, tap the OK button.
  24. Tap the Next button.

  25. In the Area code: and Phone number: text boxes, type your local ISP access number. Remember to check with your local telephone company to make sure that the number you choose is a local toll-free call. You may need to check Force long distance or Force local, depending on the layout of your area codes. For example, if your Dialing Properties in Control Panel is set to use the area code of 425 and you want to dial an ISP in the 206 area code, the Windows CE device will treat that as a long distance number by placing a "1" in front of the area code, even though on the telephone it is a local call.
  26. Tap Finish.
