Nokia Imagewear Medallion

Stylish digital necklace displays images transferred from Windows Mobile devices and Nokia infrared phones

Since ancient times, men and women have worn necklaces for a variety of reasons. Knights and kings used charms and amulets to protect their warriors in battle. Lords and ladies adorned their necks to signify power and social status. And men and women have used them to accent personal style and beauty. The symbols displayed on necklaces have changed, but the basic technology and materials have remained the same—at least until now!

Stylish interactive neckwear has finally arrived, in the form of Nokia's Imagewear Medallion I (http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,43610,00.html), which displays the color digital image of your choice in a small display centered on an attractive black and silver choker. Images in JPEG format can be copied back and forth between the Medallion and a Pocket PC or select transfer. Infrared transfer works with a Pocket PC, but is particularly well suited to Pocket PCs with built-in cameras, like the iPAQ h6315. Just snap a photo, beam it over, and experience the immediate gratification of displaying it on the Medallion!

Wearing the image of my eye transferred from my iPAQ h6315 to the Medallion. Interestingly, the illumination level randomly alternates for variety.

Beaming images to the Medallion is a breeze

The three operational buttons blend discretely into the design and the cable charging port is cleverly hidden inside of the choker. Simply twist off one of the ends of the choker to insert the charger cable.

You can use the iPAQ Pocket PC's HP Image Zone application to beam images to the Medallion. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn the Medallion on (from the button at the wearer's left) and align its IrDA port (on the bottom) with the Pocket PC's.
  2. Press the top button on the Medallion to activate the IrDA port so that it can receive the image. (A brief press of the top button sets the irDA mode to send an image and a longer press sets the mode to accept an image transfer.)
  3. From the HP Image Zone photo viewing software on the iPAQ Pocket PC, select the image to transfer and then the following from the menu bar: File>Send>via IrOBEX. The image will then be transferred via infrared to the Medallion.
