Headless Embedded CE and Mobile Devices as Data Collectors and Web Servers

EDAS - Ethernet Data Acquisition System

Did you know you can host a Web server on your Windows Mobile device? In fact, depending upon the OEM, some devices come with a Web Server already built into them. Additionally, devices are designed without screens as well. The EDAS (Fig. 1) manufactured by Intelligent Instrumentation (instrument.com) matches both of these attributes.

The merits of using Windows CE/Mobile for data collection include:

  • There are no moving parts to fail such as hard drives and cooling fans.
  • The devices can be ruggedized to withstand extreme temperatures and impact shock.
  • They can be deployed in extreme environments. For example, they can be submerged in water or mounted on an assembly line, bridge, or on a 200-foot-high ceiling.
  • The strength and diversity of the EDAS for data collection and instrumentation is excellent. The device can be configured with additional hardware modules based on the type of data you need to collect, such as Digital Input/Output, Analog I/O, Serial I/O, Switched Relay Outputs (switching 2 amps @ 30 VDC or 120 VAC). The Digital I/O can be utilized to create up/down counters, as well as latched, pulsed, delayed, and square wave I/O. Analog I/O is capable of sensing voltage, current, or thermocouple I/O.
