General tips on saving memory

Here are some memory-saving tips from some of our experts' posts in the Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine blogs from 5/1-5/2/07 (http://www.smartphonemag.com/blogs) (Check our blog site at the first of each month for in-depth treatment of a topic. More memory-saving tips can be found in the May 1 blog entries):

Conserving and utilizing RAM
  • Do a soft reset every so often to quickly free up your device's resources.
  • Go to Start > Settings >Systems tab >Memory >Running Programs (Smartphones: Use Task Manager in the Start menu or in a related folder there) and stop any programs that you don't want to be running. Note that you can also use third-party programs like Magic Button (http://www.trancreative.com) for more convenient access to program-closing options.
Conserving and utilizing flash ROM
  • Uninstall old applications that you don't use.
  • Delete large files that you don't need (see the tip on conserving memory under USING).
  • Install as many applications as possible on a storage card (such as games, e-mail attachments, music, pictures, etc.), saving your ROM memory for Today screen plug-ins, personal information managers, and any application that you want to launch from your hardware keys.
  • Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools >Options >Memory tab, and tap the Delete Files button (Smartphones: Go to Menu >Options >Memory). If you want to manually delete certain temporary files, open File Explorer and navigate to My Device\Windows\Profiles\guest\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5. You can also use third-party programs like SKTools (http://www.s-k-tools.com) that will do this and many other maintenance tasks.
