Be more effective and have more fun with great software and hardware accessories.
Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones are designed to be self-sufficient devices with all the basics built in and ready to go, but no single Pocket PC can be everything to everybody. Fortunately, independent developers have worked hard to create hardware and software products that help you customize your Windows Mobile device and turn it into a truly “personal” digital assistant.
This article looks at some of these solutions. We've organized it not by individual products (there are far more than ten) but by topics: the 10 ways you might want to improve your Windows Mobile device. Then we list some “no cost” and (relatively) “low cost” hardware and software you can use to accomplish this. I couldn't resist adding a few tips to some of the sections.
1. Protect your investment
Prices have dropped over the last few years and you can find Pocket PCs for under $200. But even if you get a great deal, you still need to protect your investment. The screen is one of the most fragile parts. The more scratches on your screen, the less enjoyable it is to use. Worst of all, repairing a cracked screen can set you back a couple of hundred dollars.
No cost protection
Most Pocket PCs and Smartphones come with a basic slip cover or carrying case. Use it, especially if you carry your device around in a briefcase or shoulder bag.
Low to moderate cost protection
Manufacturers also offer optional cases varying in price and quality. Go to your manufacturer's Web site and look for the link labeled “Accessories.”
In addition, a number of independent vendors offer low to moderately-priced carrying cases and slip covers. You can check out one of the following vendors: Bellagio Designs (http://www.bellagiodesigns.com), Nutshell http://(tuff-as-nuts.com/), Marware (http://www.marware.com), Piel Frama (http://www.pielframa.com), Sena Cases (http://www.senacases.com), Targus (http://www.targus.com), E & B Cases (http://www.ebcases.com/StoreFront.bok), or Vaja (http://www.vajacases.com). If you need a really rugged case, try Otter Products (http://www.otterbox.com) or Grinder Gear (http://www.grindergear.com).

A number of third party vendors offer protective cases. Sena's black leather case for the iPAQ h4100 series is shown here.
In addition, camera stores have excellent padded, weather-resistant carrying cases that may work. For less expensive solutions, check out the camera or electronics departments at discount stores such as Wal-Mart or Target. They won't have “made for the Pocket PC” stamped on the front, but they should work just fine.
Another relatively inexpensive way to avoid damage to the screen is to use screen protectors (also called “screen overlays”). These thin, transparent plastic sheets cover the Pocket PC screen, protecting it from scratches but letting you see and use the touch screen easily. HP, Toshiba, Dell, and other manufacturers sell screen protectors for their Pocket PCs and Handheld PCs. They are also available from third-party vendors such as Belkin (http://www.belkin.com), Fellowes (http://www.fellowes.com), PocketPCTechs (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/ws.asp), and MobilePlanet (http://www.mobileplanet.com).
