BASIC TIPS
Changing default Pocket Word document template
To create a new Pocket Word document, you open the application and tap on New (bottom left of screen). By default, a blank document is displayed. However, you can change the default template in Pocket Word to Meeting Notes, Memo, Phone Memo, or To Do. Follow these steps:
- Open Pocket Word.
- Tap on Tools and then Options.
- From the Default template drop-down list, select the template you desire.
- Tap on OK.
From then on, every time you open a new document, the template you selected will display (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1: Pocket Word comes with templates for meeting notes (shown here), memos, phone memos, and To Do's.
Enter the information you want into the document and hit OK and it will exit the document and give it a generic name (Meeting Notes (1), Meeting Notes (2), etc.). You can give the document a different name in one of two ways:
- With the Word document still open, open the Tools menu and tap on File > Save Document As...
- You can rename the document after you have closed it. For example, tap and hold on Meeting Notes until the edit menu is displayed, and then select the Rename/Move... option (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2: Tap and hold on the file or document name and the Edit menu pops up. Use it to rename files, delete them, create copies, and more.
Install New Fonts on Your Pocket PC
You can install any True Type font on your Pocket PC. Use ActiveSync's Explorer to copy the font to the My Device/Windows/Fonts folder on your Pocket PC. It should then appear in the fonts list of any Pocket PC application that lets you change fonts (Word, Excel, and a few others).
Toggle Screen in Windows Media Player
If you are playing music on your Pocket PC, you might want to toggle the screen off. This will help conserve battery power and prevent the accidental pressing of a screen button. Here's how you do it:
- Open Windows Media Player.
- Go to the buttons setup screen.
- In the original version of Windows Media Player for Pocket PC, this is accessed by opening the Tools menu and tapping on Settings > Buttons (Fig. 3).
- In Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, this is accessed by tapping on Menu > Options, and selecting the tab labeled "Buttons." You're presented with Media Player's Button Mapping dialog box (Fig. 4).
- Assign the Screen Toggle function to a hardware button.
- In the original Windows Media Player for Pocket PC this is accomplished by first selecting the Screen Toggle from the Select Function drop down list, and then pressing the hardware button to which you want it assigned.
- In WMP 10 Mobile, you select Toggle Screen from the Options list and then tap on the Assign button. A screen will pop up, asking you to "Press button to assign." Press the desired hardware button.
