User groups and demo camps

Participating in a user group may be one of the most rewarding if not more fun things you can do with your treasured must-have device. One can learn so much about their device through online forums all over the net, but it is another thing to be able to learn about these technologies with a live human being! User Groups can be found not just in the US, but around the world. Some meet regularly, and some occasionally. You can find a listing of them in the back pages of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine as well as on the Web site (http://www.ppcmag.com/_top/User_Groups.asp).

What is a demo camp ?

Recently, Rey Flores wrote a post about user groups and starting one in your area. I have been involved with a couple of user groups in the past and more recently with one in Toronto (http://www.onppc.com). I wanted to mention a new type of user group meeting. A "demo camp" is where individuals and companies gather together and the companies demonstrate their products. The individuals get to use the products, ask questions, make suggestions, and more. One of the main rules is "No PowerPoint demonstrations allowed!" When you have the working software, you don't need it.

Typically, demo camps happen every 4 to 5 weeks, like a regular user group meeting. You need to set a date, find a location to hold the demo camp, find some companies to demo products, and publicize the event. It's been a very popular format here in Toronto and the organizers are encouraging other cities around the world to start their own demo camps.

SBSH releases Facade version 1.2 for Smartphones

SBSH has released some great mobile software, including Facade (http://www.sbsh.net/products/facade), which does for the Smartphone what iLauncher did for the Pocket PC. According to the site, Facade is a highly customizable, tab-based Home screen plug-in that lets you view upcoming appointments and tasks directly on your Smartphone Home screen. Facade also puts a launcher tool right onto that same Home screen, allowing you to launch your favorite software directly from your Home screen with just a single click.
