Buzz from the Boards!

News from Online Forums

Welcome to the second edition of "Buzz on the Boards." Most of the buzz on the Windows CE newsgroups and message boards for the last two months has revolved around the Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PC. Everyone wants to know who has one and when the PCMCIA Expansion Packs (or "sleeves" as they're called on the boards) will be available. The official answer is that the success of the iPAQ caught Compaq off guard and they're ramping up production as fast as they can.

User feedback on the Compaq iPAQ

A few other posts mentioned problems with the iPAQ, including:

  • Loose Hard-reset door on bottom of the iPAQ - fix is to take a small jeweler's screwdriver and lift up on the lower rail that is on the side the screen is on. Doesn't take much force to accomplish it, so be gentle.
  • Dust under the screen - Compaq acknowledges the problem and says it is "working on a fix for this."
  • Cursor pad sticking in MS Reader - Compaq says that they hadn't heard of this problem, but many people on the board reported calling into Compaq and informing them of this problem and getting the same reaction.
  • Can't press two buttons at the same time - this poses problems for people trying to play games on the iPAQ. With its nice screen and fast processor the iPAQ should be the ideal gaming device, but this problem prevents many good game programmers from writing games for the iPAQ. Compaq is reportedly "looking into this."
  • Popping speaker when playing MP3s - According to Compaq, this is due to the iPAQ turning the amplifier on and off to conserve battery life.
