Recently, hardware vendors have released devices with Microsoft's new Pocket PC 2002 software. This new version provides an updated look similar to that of Windows XP, and provides the answers to many of the "why doesn't it?" questions asked of previous incarnations of the software. By far, the biggest request from our customers was the ability to synchronize subfolders within Pocket Outlook. This was one of the highest priorities for the new device and the feature is now included in Pocket Outlook for the Pocket PC 2002.
Screen 1 shows the drop down menu now available within Pocket Outlook. Tap on the minus sign next to Inbox to see all of the subfolders created within Outlook on the user's desktop PC. The user can then view the messages in a folder by simply selecting it with the stylus.
Screen 1: The Pocket PC 2002 now lets you synchronize Outlook subfolders, shown here in the Pocket Outlook drop-down menu showing synchronized subfolders.
By default, Pocket PC 2002 and ActiveSync 3.5 do not display any sub-folders when you first synchronize. This is to conserve space on your Pocket PC, and minimize the time needed to synchronize folders. The chances are the first sync with all of the subfolders included would result in a lot of data being moved to the device.
You need to tell ActiveSync which subfolders you want synchronized. This is easily done though ActiveSync 3.5 on your desktop PC. Follow these steps:
Place your Pocket PC 2002 in its data cradle, open up ActiveSync on your desktop PC.
Select Options from the Tools menu. This will display the Sync Options screen, including the different types of data that can currently be synchronized (see Screen 2).
Screen 2: The Sync Options screen displays the different types of data that can currently be synchronized with your Pocket PC.
Highlight Inbox in the list shown, and click the Settings button. This will show the Inbox settings, and contain the drop down list from which you can select the sub-folders you would like to synchronize with the device (see Screen 3).
Screen 3: In ActiveSync's Sync Options, select Inbox and then click on the Settings button. From here you can select the sub-folders you would like to synchronize.
Once you have selected the subfolders to synchronize, click OK twice to get back to the Options screen. ActiveSync will then copy the selected subfolders and the messages contained within them to your Pocket PC. From that point on, every time you synchronize Inbox, you synchronize the selected subfolders as well.
