HP Jornada Pocket PC screen 4K color
In the May/June 2000 Pocket PC on page 15, the Spec sheet states that the HP Jornada 545 and 548 have a 16-bit 65K color display. While researching the various models in your article I found that the HP can process 65K colors but is only capable of displaying 4K. I wonder if this is true of the Casio as well?
Jacob Elizardo
Jacob, HP announced that after we published the last issue (see
first newsBYTES item). I doubt the Casio E-115 has the same problem.
Casio stuck with the hardware they used for the E-105 Palm-size PC and
that definitely had a 65K color screen. —Rich
Pocket PC file storage
From the reviews in your fine magazine I have purchased the Casio Cassiopeia E-115. I am now looking for extra storage devices for it. I have looked at the SanDisk CompactFlash cards but I was hoping there were more economical alternatives. I checked the Iomega site for info on their Clik! drives and media but found very little useful stuff pertaining to PDAs. Do you know if Iomega might be developing a Clik! drive or adapter for the Pocket PC? Can we see more choices for removable storage in the future? Again thank you for a great magazine.
Herb Montes
Herb, I’ve heard nothing, not even on the level of rumors, to
indicate that Iomega is working on a Pocket PC adapter for their Clik!
drive. Right now, the only storage alternatives for the Pocket PCs are
the CompactFlash cards and IBM’s microdrive, a tiny rotating-disk hard
drive the size of a CF card. The IBM microdrive is a Type II card, which
means that it will fit into the Casio E-115 but not in the HP or Compaq
Pocket PC Type I card slot. There is one company that makes a portable,
external hard drive that connects to computers via a CompactFlash
interface, but I don’t know if they will work with the Pocket PCs — I have a writer checking on that and may publishing something about it
in the next issue. —Rich
External keyboards for the Pocket PCs?
Very much enjoyed your article on your Web site (www.pocketpcmag.com). I want to use a small instant on Pocket PC for word processing mostly. I write a lot, and would like one that will accept an add-on keyboard. I only know of one for the HP Jornada. Are there any others that you know of which can use a decent, near-full-size keyboard?
John (last name not given)
John, There are several external keyboard solutions for the Casio,
Compaq and HP Pocket PCs. Check out the following products and web
sites: KeyMate (www.microfoundry.com); GoType (www.landware.com); KeySync (www.ibizcorp.com); Travelboard 634 (www.genovation.com); Stowaway (www.thinkoutside.com). —Rich
Pocket Word or Excel on Palm-size PC?
I have a HP 430 and I would like to know if I can get Pocket Word and Excel for this machine.
Adolfo Martinez
Adolfo, Microsoft hasn’t announced any plans to make Pocket
Excel or Word available for the Palm-size PCs, and HP is not offering a
Pocket PC upgrade chip for their Jornada 430 Palm-size PCs. —Rich
Hotsyncing vs. Web browsing
There is just one thing I do not understand about the Pocket PC’s Internet Explorer application. I don’t understand this whole concept of “hotsyncing” with your computer. Let’s say I want to get a real time stock quote. Can I just go to the site and get it? Can I make a trade?
