HP Pocket PC screen not 65K colors

HP has incorrectly stated that the Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PCs are capable of displaying 16-bit/65,536 colors. HP recently discovered that while the screen technology used in the HP Jornada 540 series has the ability to display images up to 65,536 colors (16-bits), an electronic component within the product limits the actual color resolution that customers can see to 12-bit — or a maximum of 4,096 colors displayed at any one time. Therefore, the expectation set that images can be displayed in 65,536 colors is in error.

The color display of the HP Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PC’s standard screens should not be affected by this issue. Only high-resolution images viewed using specialized graphic software such as Sierra Imaging’s Image Expert CE and Pocket Internet Explorer will be affected.

This information was provided to us by HP when they found out about the error.

Windows CE Web site becomes three

Microsoft’s Windows CE has been divided into three sites:

The PocketPC.com site focuses entirely on the new Windows Powered Pocket PC and includes columns, tricks, and tips written by and for Pocket PC enthusiasts.

Phone, Pocket PC combo

At the WirelessAgenda conference held in late May Microsoft was showing off a prototype of a new device that combines mobile phone and Pocket PC functionality. Similar in concept to Kyocera’s PDQ phone (which uses the Palm OS) Microsoft’s prototype device, the “Stinger Smartphone,” features Calendar, Contacts and voice recording capabilities. No word on who is manufacturing the device, when it will be introduced, or what it will cost.
