New version of Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC

Microsoft recently released version 2.4 of its eBook reader for Pocket PC. The new version is a bug fix intended primarily for users of devices running Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software. The ability to display in landscape mode and pan and zoom on graphics, added in the previous version, are available in 2.4. If you haven't upgrade MS Reader in awhile this might be the time.

Version 2.4 will run on the Pocket PC 2002 and later devices, as well as all Phone Edition devices. It will not work on Smartphones. Interestingly, Microsoft's Web site says "While this version will run on all supported Pocket PC devices, we are only recommending that users of devices running the Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating systems upgrade."

Upgrading does not require "reactivation." Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC version 4 is a free download available on Microsoft's Web (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp).

Tip: Installing MS Reader on storage card or flash ROM

By default, MS reader will install into the main (RAM) memory of your device. If you install it in built-in flash ROM, or onto a storage card, it won't work properly without making a few changes. Follow these steps:

  1. 1. Download MS Reader, connect your Pocket PC to your PC, and click on the download to run the installation.
  2. 2. When asked if you want to install the program in main memory, select No and you are allowed to change the location. Select built-in flash memory or a storage card as your install destination and complete the installation of MS Reader.
  3. 3. On your desktop PC, click on ActiveSync's Explore button and navigate to the folder into which you installed MS Reader (it should be named Microsoft Reader).
  4. 4. Move all the .TTF (font) files from that folder to the Windows\Fonts folder on your Pocket PC.
  5. 5. Go back to the Microsoft Reader folder, right click on MsReader.exe and select Create Shortcut from the pop-up menu.
  6. 6. Right click on the shortcut and rename it MsReader.
  7. 7. Move the shortcut to the \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.
  8. 8. Do a soft-reset of your device and you're ready to use MS Reader.
