According to Gartner Dataquest, worldwide shipments of handheld computers fell 9.5 percent in the third quarter of 2000. They give as a possible reason for the slump in sales the early announcement of the new Pocket PC 2002 devices, which may have caused potential buyers to hold off until the new devices became available. According to Gartner, Compaq appeared to be most affected. Its worldwide PDA market share totaled 7.3 percent in the third quarter of 2001, down from 16 percent in the second quarter of this year.
