Letters to the Editor

I use an HP Jornada 420 Palm-size PC and a Palm Vx, and would like to be able to synchronize them both with my desktop PC. Unfortunately, my desktop PC only has one serial port, so I can only connect one PDA at a time. When I connect one device to the desktop PC and try to synchronize, my desktop PC seems to think that the other device's synchronization program is in use and tells me that the COM port is busy. Is there a way to select the right synchronization program for the device I have connected?

Jack Coe

Jack, I got this advice from Microsoft tech support. To connect both devices to the same COM port you will have to toggle between ActiveSync 3.0 and Hotsync. (I assume that Hotsync is the program you are using for the Palm.) To use the Jornada 420, you have to disable Hotsync. Double click on the Hotsync icon in System tray and remove the check next to "Local Serial." When you want to use Hotsync again, make sure you re-check this option.

To use the Palm device you have to disable ActiveSync. Double-click on the ActiveSync icon in the System tray. Go to the File menu, select Connection Settings and remove the check next to "Allow serial cable or infrared connection on this COM port."

I'm having a problem with the spacing in any Pocket Word documents I create. I am unable to get anything but single spacing unless I press Enter a couple of times to put in hard returns. I find this to be a real nuisance when typing memos or believe it or not papers at university during the summer. Is there a way to set the spacing for documents so that I don't need to import into Word and then have to reformat? Thanks for your help and for a very useful magazine.

John Ridgley

John, You cannot modify the line spacing in a Pocket Word document. However, you can set the line spacing (and other formatting) in a Word document on your desktop PC, save the document and then copy it over to your Handheld PC. The line spacing and most of the other formatting will remain in the document. When you want to take notes or type a memo in Pocket Word, open this preformatted document first, and then save it immediately with a new file name (e.g. "Notes1", "Memo3", etc.). You're ready to take your notes or type your memo with the formatting you created in the Word document. I set up a desktop PC Word 97 document with double line spacing. Then I copied it over to my HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC Pro twice. The first time I translated it to Pocket Word format. The second time I kept it in Word 97 format. (The H/PC Pro version of Pocket Word can open both types of documents.) Each document kept the double line spacing. Hope this helps some.

PocketDOS is an MS-DOS 6.22 compatible DOS emulator for your Windows Powered Handheld and Pocket PC Computer. A free demo is available at www.pocketdos.com. What follows is a letter I received from PocketDOS customer support. I've had good experiences with their tech support department. They went out of their way helping me figure out the Word Perfect problem even before they knew I was writing a review of their product. PocketDOS support wrote:

We have succeeded in getting Word Perfect 5.1 to run correctly on PocketDOS without having to resort to the complicated process of using disk "images." It turned out to be a one line change to our file system redirector code. We will release a new version with this fix some time next week. Thank you for your help with the Word Perfect issue.
