Microsoft Makes MS Messenger and Terminal Services Client Available to Pocket PC 2002 Upgrade Buyers

Purchasers of the Pocket PC 2002 upgrade (available on CD to Compaq iPAQ owners) were a bit miffed when they discovered that the upgrade was lacking key applications. Microsoft quickly reassured those upgrading their iPAQs that these applications, MS Messenger and Terminal Services Client, would be forthcoming. Both are now available for free download at the Web address below. Note that these applications will run only under the new Pocket PC 2002 OS.

ICQ for Pocket PC Version 1.0 Beta Released

ICQ, one of the most popular communication applications on the Internet, has been released in a beta version for Pocket PCs. A beta version is a preliminary version which is released in order to allow interested users to evaluate the program and report bugs to the developer. The beta version of ICQ, which, as customary, is free, is available for download at ICQ's Web site.

HP, Casio and Compaq Release Service Packs

HP, Casio, and Compaq have released similar Service Packs for Pocket PC 2002: HP for the Jornada, Casio for the E-200, and Compaq for the iPAQ. This Service Pack "improves support for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connections to correct problems experienced when connecting to read e-mail or browse the Web..." and more. It also "gives users the ability to synchronize directly through Microsoft Mobile Information 2002 Server with their Microsoft Exchange Server." You can download these from HP, Casio or Compaq's Web site, but the best description of the Service Pack is found on Compaq's Web site.

Windows CE .NET Debut in 2002

Microsoft Corp. unveiled its new Windows CE operating system, Windows CE .Net, in January. Windows CE is the operating system for Handheld and Pocket PCs covered in this magazine. Formerly code-named Talisker, the new OS will support Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless networking, Internet Explorer 5.5, and Windows Media 8.0. The hallmark of the Windows CE .Net OS will be its ability to deliver Web-based services and content to mobile devices. Windows CE .Net will be part of a "complete solution" of tools and applications that will allow developers and hardware manufacturers to implement new, customized designs quickly and efficiently. Compaq is offering several new options for the iPAQ Pocket PC:

The Rugged Case is "designed and tested to resist dust and water contamination per the IP54 standard, and can even take a fall to concrete from a height of four feet." A clear protective membrane allows the iPAQ to be used while protected. Fits all iPAQs.
