What's Online

GPS, Geocaching, Mobile YouTube, Freeware

In addition to the great GPS resources offered in this magazine, there are a number of excellent Web sites that will give you the information you need. In this issue, we touch on some of those sites and talk about Windows Live Search, a free program/service from Microsoft that lets you get maps and driving directions from any connected Windows Mobile device. And regarding the other theme of this issue—entertainment—it seems important to note the arrival of a mobile version of the most popular video site around—YouTube.

GPS-related Web sites

  • Pocket PC GPS and Navigation (gpsinformation.org/dale/PocketPC/wince.htm) is a great all-in-one resource for Windows Mobile GPS. It offers a full collection of available products, reviews of selected hardware and software, and tips on how to best use the hardware and the software. Topics discussed include Maps with voice guidance, GPS mapping programs, GPS device-specific information, GPS aviation, and more.
  • GPSinformation.net is the host site of the previous page. It bills itself as the "World's Most Popular GPS Information Resource." It has a ton of reviews, all listed on the home page. Plus, it offers FAQs, tutorials, instructions, and more. It's quite an amazing collection—hundreds of articles and reviews. There are also tons of links to vendors, hardware, accessories, and software. The Quick Start Info section is especially useful for new users.
  • Pocket GPS World (pocketgpsworld.com), another extremely rich resource, is a general GPS site covering a variety of GPS hardware, software, and mapping tools. Although it covers many platforms, a fair amount of the content is related to Windows Mobile. The site offers news, reviews, and product comparisons. It also has dozens of forums, many of which are focused on a particular GPS hardware or software product.
  • Gps PasSion (gpspassion.com) offers news and reviews of GPS hardware and software, with a fair amount of coverage of the Windows Mobile platform. If you join the Gps PasSion Club, you can receive personal assistance via a special forum for club members as well as discounts on GPS hardware and software. They also have some quite active forums that are open to anyone.
  • General intro to GPS: If you need an introduction to GPS, one of the better articles I've seen is by Suzanne Ross on Microsoft's site (microsoft.com/windowsmobile/articles/gps.mspx), She explains what it is, her experience trying it on both a Pocket PC and smartphone, the choice of integrated GPS or add-on, the hobby of geocaching, and more. Some of the information is outdated, but it's a useful overview.
  • Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine forums: Our online forums have an active GPS section with news, product announcements, and more. It's a great place to post your questions and get them answered by the GPS experts that frequent the site. Go to the forums home page (pocketpcmag.com/forum) and scroll down to the GPS section.
