QuickTip: Color-coded Cable Ties

I've been traveling quite a bit for work, recently, and on the longer trips I’ve been carrying a ton of electronic equipment. Some of the “usual suspects” that I slip into my carry-on include my Windows Mobile device, my MP3 player, my PC, international power converters for layovers in foreign airports, DC adaptors for the plane and much more.

Unfortunately, each of these gadgets comes with a number of power and sync cables, so I created a new system to organize the clutter using Velcro color-coded cable ties. Each device that I carry gets its own color tie.

The Wednesday Request: How do you "alpha dial?" on a Smartphone?

Gang, I'm stumped. I have a question from a loyal reader, who has the Samsung Blackjack. She asks "How can I dial an 'alpha phone number' (e.g. 1-800-CONTACTS) from my phone when the keypad doesn't list the alphabet on the phone number keys?" I did a little searching and found that many of the Windows Mobile Smartphones suffer from this same problem!

In fact, my fellow staffer Edward M.

Oops I'm Late! Economy Edition

If you read my Get more from GPS by sharing your location with family and friends article in the latest issue of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine, you know that there are many applications that will use your current location to provide a whole suite of valuable services like local business search, real-time maps and more.

Oops I'm Late! was one of the most innovative applications that I reviewed for this article, because it actually searches your Windows Mobile Calendar for the next appointment, identifies your location, and "auto-magically" figures out how far you are from the appointment. If you're going to be late, it sends a text message to the person who's waiting for you with your ETA. Last month, the company released an "Economy edition" that offers most of the features of this powerful application at a more palatable price.

Oops I'm Late Screenshot
Oops I'm Late! will extract your next appointment from the Calendar application and display information on your distance and arrival time based on your current GPS coordinates.
