Unfortunately, it's not possible.

1, the PC will only see the PPC as a simple PPC and not as a Wi-Fi USB dongle. Unfortunately, PPC's aree pretty dumb and their services like built-in Wi-Fi can't be 'offered' to external devices to use.

2, the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile operating system doesn't support connection sharing. You can't even install a very simple (there're no other implementations....) HTTP proxy on your PDA to give the desktop PC the ability to get HTTP pages, using the PDA's connection because it's plugged in to the desktop via USB, which is not even a BT PAN (let alone a REAL LAN), and, therefore, uses the same IP addresses for both devices.

By the way, Wi-Fi USB sticks are pretty cheap - around 20-30 bucks, I think. Why don't you just get one?

r you sure it cant be done? if they can make a wireless modem in the phone to and offer pc's wireless gprs modem... im guessing i wouldnt be too much harder to make the wifi shared via bluetooth or usb? infact someone else pointed out a phone which does support wifi sharing ...

The 558 isn't a phone but a regular PPC, which was a high-end, all-in-one device in its time, late 2003 (except for the VGA screen - the Toshiba e800 already had a VGA screen when the 558 came to the market).

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to share a net connection on most (regular, not phone edition!) current Pocket PC's - the operating system just doesn't support it and, due to the comparatively low demand (I've been asked the same question on the English/Finnish/Hungarian Pocket PC boards some 3 or 4 times in the last half a year, which isn't very often because I'm asked more "traditional" questions at least an order of magnitude more frequently), noone seems to want to write support for it either.

Mitac's solution, if it works (we all know the difference between what a device manufacturer claims and what is reality - think of the USB modem functionality support of the Motorola Mpx200, for example. It only worked in theory, but not in practice), is indeed proprietory and can hardly be used with other PPC's.

Hi, again

Menneisyys, you wrote:"I'm pretty sure it's impossible to share a net connection on most (regular, not phone edition!) current Pocket PC's"

Is there anything different in phone PPCs that can make this possible ?(to share the device's internet connection with a PC)

I Have a HTC8125

Thanks

I found a program named "WMWifiRouter router". There is also the bundled "internet sharing", which is required by the aforementioned one.

It makes me think that Windows mobile CAN share internet connections. We already have GPRS ->USB and GPRS ->WiFi, What else is required to get wiFi ->USB?

Thanks!

OK, I was introduced to a solution for the mistery

There is a program called pdanet that does the job. Its homepage is: www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php

It gets ANY internet connection that your PDA can use and passes it to your pc via Activesync (USB, IR, Bluetooth serial) or via Bluetooth PAN.

It´s everything that I had asked.

The only problem is that it is more pricey than a wifi adapter (double, actually), but it is the solution that I was looking for.

I hope that this helps you, too
