Activesync error 678

My Jornada worked fine for about 6 months--then Activesync became a problem. Too frustrated to deal with the issue, I put it aside for several months. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give it another try and I'm near the end of my rope.

Here are the basics--Windows XP home edition, Jornada 720, error 678; Activesiync removed and reinstalled several times, the last time per the instructions on Chris Herrera's website re manually removing the program; I've tried using 3.71, currently using 3.8; I've tried both serial and USB links; re COM1, I've used all the bits per second settings offered on the Jornada, chosing matching numbers on my laptop, of course; I lowered the connection settings on COM1; I've tried the timing-related solutions (which essentially amount to trying repeatedly to connect); I've reboot and soft reset more times than I can remember; I've tried connecting with the docking station and without the docking station; I've disabled firewalls.

I have noticed that the Jornada will sometimes try to connect via USB, despite the fact that I changed the connection setting via the control panel.

Frequently, there seems to be a connection, but it never lasts more than a few seconds.

I'm wondering it there are other things I can that might make COM1 more receptive.

I would appreciate any help

hi!

if you do connect once successfully and establish again a partnership (as the original has been deleted, i suppose), i'd recommend you wlan syncing.. more reliable in my opinion (and faster of course!).

another idea: do you want to synchronize or just transfer files? then there's several workarounds. :)

have you ever hard reset the 720? does "rebooting" mean hard reset in your terminology? when you absolutely removed activesync the last time, did you try hard resetting as well at the same time?

i don't dare to suggest win reinstalling.. and it really should be solvable without reinstalling xp in most cases but sometimes the problem is actually with xp itself..
btw, have you tried it with another pc?

oh and i see you mention your pc is a laptop. does it have infrared? you could try it too..

Thanks for your response, Cmonex.

I don’t know what happened to the former partnership. All I remember is that one day the 720 stopped connecting to my laptop. I don’t remember if I had just installed or uninstalled something that could have triggered the problem. I really hated giving up the 720, but at the time I simply didn’t have the time or patience to deal with the issue.

Regarding your other suggestions:

I have not hard reset the 720, but I’ll certainly try that. When I said that I had rebooted, I was referring to restarting my laptop after any significant change, for example, whenever I removed and reinstalled Activesync.

If I don’t resolve this soon, I’ll try another computer. I have checked the cables with other devices, and they seem to be working just fine.

My laptop does not have an infrared port, unfortunately.

I don’t know anything about wlan syching—don’t even know what it is--but I’ll look that up this afternoon.

The key for me may well be one of the “workarounds” you refer to. I use the 720 for research and writing. Copying files back and forth would be a bit of a pain. However, it would be much less of a pain than dealing with the current situation. I’m assuming this would involve buying some device that would allow my laptop to read the memory card, right? Any other info about the workaround idea would be appreciated.

Again, thanks so much for your help.

hello :)

i guess then the problem is not so serious, if you don't need synching! :) (i meant PIM synching, for example) your options:
- file sharing via lan or wlan
- usb memory card reader or pcmcia - cf adapter for your laptop, both of these are cheap

but, if you have never tried a hard reset, then it's highly likely that it will solve the issue. just try it :)

i hope i could help! :)

oh and wlan synching is just synching via wlan, but if you don't have wlan then it's no real option for you.

What software do you use to sync thru the wlan? I never have my J720 near my laptop (which has IR to make it easy) but as a true "mini laptop" it isn't near any other computers ever...and it ALWAYS has it's lil' Orinoco card in it.

Activesync

I did the hard reset on the 720, but no changes in my situation--except, perhaps (this could be wishful thinking on my part), the machines do seem to connect more frequently, but the connection never holds for more than a few seconds.

Is there an alternative to Activesync that might be less trouble-prone when it comes to the 720 and/or xp?

Is there a chance that AvantGo is related to my problems with Activesync and the 720?

At some point in the past week I was adviced to remove AvantGo, which I did. However, I noticed that it reinstalls with Activesync.

I've used AdvantGo and it has always either been one of two things.
1. Useless.
2. Messed up my PDA.
I decieded to never go near it again and if I want news I'll use IE.
I would recomend uninstalling it.

HUH, not good news! so i'm almost sure that the PC is to blame..

if uninstalling avantgo does not solve the problem, then here is another idea, though it's quite simple and you might have already tried it :). if the connection was unsuccessful, kill activesync from taskmanager (wcescomm.exe or something like that) and restart it and do a soft reset on the jornada too. sometimes it helps in my case.

or just do manual filetransfer with a card reader (or pcmcia-cf adapter) as i already suggested.

Bridget, look at table on page 41 of 720's user guide to pick connection type. Hal

It seems that my laptop is the problem. I installed Activesync (the 3.1 version that came with the 720) on my kids' desk top and the machines connected immediately.

I'm going to post a new topic soon asking for help fixing the problem with my laptop. I don't even know where to begin looking.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.

I recently got my Jornada and am having the same problem. Did you ever figure out what to do about it. I have a 'hunch' its badly worn contacts in the cradle. I have another cradle on the way. It's been awhile since you encountered this and I hope it is being read by you now (2-29-08) and that you found the solution. I know problems with computers are usually software. If that's it, then the WinCE3.0 may be corrupted. I bought the thing used and will return it given the problem is 'insurmountable.'

If you've read this, please respond either way.

Thanks,

Bill

geez, no, you can't return this for that reason. CE3 cannot be corrupted, it is in non flashable rom. just do a hard reset if you haven't tried that yet.

First, your reponse is GREATLY appreciated. I've wanted one of these for years and have every desire to 'make it work.'

I realize the OS in the ROM and am not surprised at your answer.

In response to your hard reset suggestion, I've tried it twice. It does sync ~ 1 per 5-10 replacements on the cradle and...once it does, it will hold the sync until I BREAK IT.

I've ordered another cradle. The problem is obviously commom and would seem to point to worn contacts...only possible with the cradle. Those 10 pins which move when you place it on the cradle (connections that you can see) are handling a very low voltage. I'm thinking it just might be the "Achille's heel" of the system because the problem has been very commom. Besides, Bridget's 6 months of 'trouble free operation' supports this.

I've also ordered a sync cable which I believe will connect directly to the Jornada from the multi-pin connectors on the back of my desk-top (and laptop).

Question: will that sync plug DIRECTLY into my Jornada?

Pardon my 'divergence,' but I have another question. How do they handle internet. For example, when surfing, the 'busy' hour glass sign NEVER shuts off...and on ebay, I can't see everything I do on my desktop nor laptop. I've done the obvious...tried moving the image with the lower right 'arrow' keys and I run into blank screen. 11 mbs is very slow, but I've given it ALOT of time. An ebayer I consulted on the 'hanging hour glass' said the Jornada is trying to do a hard reset. If there's been a previous topic or you have 'the answer,' another 'response' will again be GREATLY appreciated.

One last comment...shame on HP for 'orphaning' these.

Thanks...William

The cradle I bought just arrived. It looks brand new. On the first try a sync was achieved. Then I disconnected and tried it again. After two error messages (678 and 605(?)), resetting the Jornada and ~ 6 tries I achieved a second sync. Either I'm dead wrong or the 'new' cradle has hidden wear. I'll email the seller and ask. It wasn't presented as NEW so she will tell me.

I've read about this problem on other forums and have set my Windows XP SP2 firewall settings as instructed therein. I'm not sure if that helped or now. As long as I can achieve a sync I can live with the required repetitious attemps although it would seem someone would have a positive answer. Perhaps a 'refurbished Jornada WITH CRADLE would be the answer IF I'm right and the cradle was refurbished.

Of more concern as whether or not the machine is functioning properly is the internet problem I mentioned in my last submittal. I will be researching that on my own but would appreciate input. I'm sure alot of you have answers to that issue.

Thanks, and I'm happy to part of YOUR world.

William
