Toshiba Genio E550G Support

Hi Everybody

I believe all Toshiba Genio E550G having hard time getting support from Audiovox and Toshiba. Both of them really sucks. I wanna setup up this topic to help those E550G owner and also wish the other E550G owner can lend a helping hand. For start, I bought the E550G without cable, sofeware and power adapter and almost nothing, the pda just can power on that all. I use my Sony PSP power adapter to charge it haha.. it works fine. Let me gather all my info of what I do and what software I found that good for this PDA and write it down slowly in this topic, feel free to ask. I try my best to help..I setup a web site to host the important file I collected. pleas check out www.rokrsoft.net for all the download.

[:D]

My current hardware stuff I use is, Ambicom WL1100c-CF compact flash wireless adapter for my wireless lan and Chrono CFBT02-N CompactFlash Bluetooth adapter with 1 GB SD card. I just found the USB cable, trying it now and it work well with my newly install Microsoft Activesync 4.1.

[:D]

Currently I am using PDAmill. This picture viewer work fine with this PDA..Any body want this program please drop a msg with email and I email to you.

For MSN messenger that is not work, here is the update patch for it to get it working.!!

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/msnmessenger/ppc-dl02eng.mspx?submit1=I+Accept+%3E%3E

[:D]

Guys, I survived the SP4 rom update by using HP sp4 update for pocket pc 2002. It come with media player 8.5 too!.. if u need the file, reply this topic with your email and i send to u guys.

[:D] No risk no gain

I just finnish my experiment on getting the media player 8.5 to play video. I use windows media encoder to recode the video to pocket pc 2002 format and transfer to my pda to play.. it works fine.

[8D]

I will gather the list of file to share with all E550G, but i do not respondsible for what happen if any thing go wrong with your PDA..any way I tested on my own PDA before I put up here..

Service Pack 4 for PC 2002
sp4ppc2002.exe - 8.02MB

Once i uploaded..I put the link here. if link fail..email me and i put up again (this is because the file will remove if nobody download for more then 10 days)
[:p]

There is a couple of update for pocket Pc 2002 in microsoft.com . Go to the download center of microsoft. Search under windows mobile 2002 then it list out those undate, it also include the SDK for 2002. I think i try it to see if I can create some software for this PDA.

I am glad to see someone is actively using a genio e550g. There is no support anywhere. I downloaded the sp4 upgrade and will give it a try. I am currently trying to set up my e550 to use as a gps navigation unit. It has been working, but there are some issues with the gps receiver and the processor doesn't seem to keep up with the moving maps while driving.

Anyway, if anyone wants to email me about the unit, feel free. Talk later

I agree with fishie202 it's good to see the Genio e550g being used and thanks xtrooper for the ppc2002sp4 [:)]. Let me know if there were any problems setting it up that I should look out for. I just picked up a Genio and will be adding whatever info or software advice I come across to this forum. So far the e550g seems more than adequate for my needs. I would like to try gps eventually. I'm converting some videos to mpeg as we speak. If you guys are interested there's some useful info at this sitehttp://www.pocketmovies.net/dvdrip.php3.
Be back soon.

I am having a little difficulty with the gps operation. I am using Delorme Street Atlas for Handheld. It is an older version than the 2006, but seems ok. The e550g seems to get locked up often when the maps are moving across the screen during navigation. I am using a no name compact flash gps receiver, so that may be the problem as well. Although, it does acquire and track fine. I may invest in the upgraded software to see if it gets any better. In all, the e550g is great, but would love to find an upgrade to Pocket PC 2003 or even the newest windows mobile.

xtrooper,
what difficulties did you have installing service pack 4?
Thanks.

fishie202,
Have you ever used mappoint? I was going to get MP2004 but I decided to wait for the 2006 version. You can get the academic version for about $50.00. I hear it's an excellent program.

I have not tried mappoint, but maybe I will. As for the upgrade to sp4 using the linked file. I had no problem. Followed the link, downloaded the file and followed the instructions. Took about 10 minutes. I haven't experienced any issues since the upgrade.

after I upgrade the SP4. i found the my wireless card will lost the IP after power off and on again. I try to find out what actuatly happen. the temporary solution for now is after I off, I pull out my card. then when I turn on my PDA, then I plug in my wireless card.. every thing work fine.

hello guys!, glad to see some one actuately reply.. i taught I am the only one use the 550 in the world... [:p]

As for upgrade to 2003, I check through lots of website, toshiba, audiovox and microsoft. Only microsoft mention abit about upgrading. they said they only sell the upgrade to pda manufacturer or brand seller like toshiba or audiovox but now both audiovox and toshiba 'wash hand' (singapore term meant dont care). I send a email to microsoft to tell them the problem and ask if they could sell to private user and we will responsible ourselves if the PDA screw up.. haha

fishes.. maybe your internal memory not enough or the PDA take time to do the job, try set to 400 mhz and clear up a bit of unuse stuff in the internal memory. Initially, I taught my PDA go stupid when I browse internet.. I stop and go ,stop and go.. but when i do that.. it become more smoother..hee but at the expense of my batteries... currently, i also use my external PSP batteries pack for my my PDA battery backup.. it works find!!

Yo!

Anybody have any java to install so we can run java on the 550...

[:D]

I haven't had the time to try any java, but I have searched the internet a bit and found the following site, in case you haven't been there it may be of some help. Let me know if there is anything good.

http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/computing/users/fittond/ppcjava.html#savaje

I try it out and let u guys know.. i am also looking for wap broswer ..hee try every thing

Hi guys,

I got my genio over 3 years ago and all it has been doing is collecting dust. I was really disappointed with the non-existant support for it. I'm happy that I found this post since it may help answer some questions I have. First off, I would like to use the genio as a gps. I have no experience with gps and am hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. What and where do you guys recommend that I can get the part to make the genio work as a gps system? Do I need to install a software? Is there a fee to update the maps? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

It good to know that I still have a Genio 550 family. I thought we were obselete. My question is can I use my PDA as a drive (ie "E")when connected to my computer so that I can access the drive directly and not to have to go through activesync.

Anybody have any free good uploading file hosting site to recommend.. i wanna keep the sp4 and the rest of the stuff online so everybody can download it.. please drop a msg if u have a good recommendation..(please do not have thing like after 10 day dont download then file auto delete)

Hi All, I lost my User CD (actually my nephew lost it)
and I need a source for the user guide-specifically how to warm and cold boot. I know that you use the slides on the bottom left and left side bottom, but that's it-I forgor which goes first and what to hold down, etc. any help would be appreciated!

Also you may find it interesting that I use my Genio e550g to spot check photos while shooting-mostly at the beach...

Thanks for the help!

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I got the Genio E550G passdown when my owner got a new Treo 700. But we lost the disc. So now my PC (Windows XP) will not find the drivers & I can't find anywhere online to get them. Please help. Thank you. I have downloaded the newest version of Microsoft ActiveSync

Hello again. I have been having some health issues, so I haven't been spending much time using my genio or internet, but I am feeling a bit better and have some of the stuff you are looking for. I posted a copy of the user manual on a website I own, so you can download it from there. I tried posting a zip file of the entire OEM CD, but it was taking forever and timed out. File was almost 700 MB. I do have the disc and zip file if anyone knows a better way to transfer to you. Anyway, follow the link below for the manual. It should ask you to download. Let me know if I can provide anything else.

www.dealpouncer.com/UsersGuide.pdf

ps. xtrooper - I was going to put the SP4 upgrade on there as well, but I can't find the file on my computer. If I find it, I will post it and let everyone know.

Thanks,for the User Guide, Fishie!!!!
I hope your health issues improve-I KNOW what you mean, about health issues though, I am a lung cancer survivor.

Guys.. I put up the sp4 upgrade . but only last ten days... if u guys missing it.. drop a msg here. and i put up again until we have a permanent solution. (damn .. i hope toshiba can sponsor a web site for me :P)

http://www.zshare.net/download/sp4ppc2002-exe.html for SP4 upgrade.

As for cnstetson.. the latest active sync 4 have the driver.. i check my usb driver.. it is provide by microsoft and detect as
'TOSHIBA USB SYNC 0700' .. file use is c:\windows\system32\drivers\wceusbsh.sys

Fishie

Hope u get better!!!!
As for the 700mb disk.. do u know anything of bit torrent.. maybe u can do that!

Yeah, I know about Bit Torrent, but I only have dial-up which leaves torrents out of the question due to their size.
The User Guide is what I was after anyway, and thanks to you I now have it!
Thanks again!

I have placed the sp4 upgrade at the following location. It should be there for as long as I keep paying for the hosting.

www.dealpouncer.com/sp4ppc2002.exe

ps. I think I am feeling a bit better now. I thank everyone for hoping I get better. Luckily, it is nothing serious, just extremely annoying, and noone can give me a diagnosis. When you feel like crap, doctors telling you "It will probably just go away" just doesn't cut it.

Guys

I just bought another discontinued product to fit onto this PDA. a Audiovox RTM-8000 GSM CF card and It works just fine. I wanna see if it can use as a phone. Currently I am testing if the PDA battery can hold one day. I also use the PSP ext power pack (4 AA battery) as a backup power...

Hey guys, first of all i really want to say that i appreciate what you guys are doing on here. i thought support for this pda was all but extinct.

My 550 has been off for well over a year now and i just pulled it out today for the heck of it. a few things i am wondering are....

what type of wireless card should i look for to be able to use the internet? which one will give me best performance?

did you ever find out xtrooper if microsoft would send you that upgrade for pocket pc 2003?

how big of a cf memory card can i get? can i get up to 8 gig and still have the 550 read it correctly?

and finally i have seen it mentioned already in this thread, but if you would please tell me what the best GPS map program and external card there is i would really appreciate it. and if there is a fee to update maps?

Thanks again guys and hopefully this thread will keep going, its the only one that i have seen!!!

glad to hear your feeling better fishie!

torqu3

From what I can tell, support is extinct. Just a few of us trying to keep it alive. I am glad to know that more people are finding this though.

I tried a sandisk wireless card (11 MB per sec) I bought on EBay. Unfortunately, I think it was broke because it wouldn't work on mine or a coworkers PDA. It was nice though because it was compact flash with built in 128MB memory. You mentioned you wanted a big CF card so a SDIO wireless card may be better for you. I am not sure how big you can go before the genio won't read. I only use 1GB SD cards and it works fine.

As for GPS, I bought the latest Delorme Street Atlas 2006 for Handheld. Works much better than earlier versions. Not sur eif you pay to upgrade, as I just bought it. 40 bucks at COMPUSA. For a receiver, I have some generic CF GPS receiver. Got that from www.compgeeks.com, but they can be found many places for pretty cheap. I would have liked to get a more compact type, but this was at the right price for me. If you use a compact flash adpater, then you need large SD memory cards for the maps. If you find an SDIO card that works, your large CF card would be required for maps. It seems that large SD memory and keeping your CF slot free for cards is the most economical. Limits the memory size a bit though. Anyway, if you are going to try and use this unit heavily for navigation, a dedicated GPS navigation would probably be better. It is ok for that occasional use and directions though.

Hope this helps a bit.

I appreciate your concern for my well being. My last post was on a good day, cuz I am still having major issues. My left side of face and tongue has been numb/tingling/tight feeling for the past two months. I have been having severe head pain off and on just recently as well. I am going nuts here. Got an appointment tomorrow (6/08/06) with a emergency neuro clinic. So far my MRI and CAT scan look fine and everything else is negative. I think I may be having some sort of severe migraines that are affecting my neuro system. Guess I will see what they say tomorrow.

thanks a lot fishie, info really helped. and i appreciate you posting back while your not feeling good as well! get well!

im going to be buyin quite a bit for this PDA here shortly so ill let you know how everything works

torqu3...
I check with Microsoft.. they only sell to PDA manufacturer.. not end user.. as for the memory card.. i have a 1Gig SD card in. and it work fine..my GSM CF adapter also work fine..As for Wireless adapter.. i have listed my brand on first few msg.. but any CF wireless will do as long as they support pocket pc 2002. Recently I tested the PDA with Sony psp madcatz ext battery pack.. they PDA can go on for 7 hrs with my mp3 runing.

Fishie

Did you check your blood pressure..good?..try to relax.. my boss have so thing like this with the face muscle pull to left side.. the doc told him it is a virus infection on the nerve, plus he also has high blood pressure.. now a day he relax and take it easy.. he also going vegeterian too...

Hi

Try this link for for the service pack 4
http://www.dealpouncer.com/sp4ppc2002.exe

As for charging the PDA, u can buy a Sony PSP charger, it works the same(or any power adapter with same voltage , amp and connecter for the PDA. As for the cable, the last time i bought was about S$20 plus (Singapore dollars, in singapore), if you are singaporean I can tell u where to buy, if you are from USA.. try ebay.com unless ebay dont sell any more. infra red port will be last. (last last option is.. I can try looking for it in the shop that i bought from then send to you but you have to pay for the cable plus the ship n handling)

Thank you so much for the help. I will buy a charger as soon as possible. When I used to use the pda I would have trouble keeping all of my info and contacts stored. Why does that happen? If I don't use the pda for a couple of days all of my saved appts and contacts disappears. It's really frustrating not having the support. I am so glad that I discovered this site. What do you suggest I do?

After I upgrade to SP4, My window media player change to version 8.5. I cant tell the messenger is updated or not because I already update my messenger patch early. My wireless card also work more properly and not hang on me.It seem to be more stable with no hanging any more. Remember, you must have power supply to plug on then can upgrade and also the upgrade take awhile.. please be patient to wait.

Hi guys, I have a Genio e550G as well. I also noticed that neither Toshiba, Audiovox, or UTStarCom (Audiovox sold communications dept. to them) support our device. There was a fan site a while ago dedicated to this device and sent a petition to Audiovox to get the upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003, but it failed and I think the site is gone as well. I just had a very hard time getting Windows Media Player Mobile to work too, and had to do it myself without any support from the company, which probably would not have helped any way. I don't think I'll buy much stuff from Toshiba and Audiovox any more. The device is still very good, but the support is non-existent.

do the SP4 upgrade to get media player 8.5 then it is good for mp3.. if u wanna use for video, use the microsoft encoder to convert from avi to pocket pc format with audio selection choose radio quality, if u choose cd quality..there will be no sound.
the link to sp4 is a couple of msg above.

:)

I already got the EUU4 update a while back from Audiovox (before they sold their communications devision), but thanks for the suggestion. I also prefer WMA format over MP3. I use 64 kbps wma and it sounds almost as good as 128 kbps mp3.

I just dusted off my Genio e550 after a year of inactivity, so excuse my quasi-newbie ignorance, but to what folder on the PDA do you extract these driver files? When you click on the .exe file that was posted herein, it defaults to an Ipaq folder on the mother PC. How do you get it to the PDA, and where do you put it?

I to have an unused-for-sometime Genio'E and was glad to find this message string.

I hope we hear from fishie202 again soon and that he's feeling better soon.

Can anyone read Japanese? I had this bookmark saved from long ago and see it still works. The only problem is, the site is in Japanese and I can't make heads or tails of it.

www.genio-e.com/pda/

Keep-up the posts!

This page seems to have something about a upgrade rom or upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003. I wonder? If I tried it, would my e550G display Japanese instead of English?

www.genio-e.com/pda/dlonegai/dl_pc14.htm

Looks like Toshiba supported the e550G longer in Japan than they did in the U.S.

Any body read japanese???
