Using IR port to connect PPC > notebook > net

Hi all:

Looks like it's been a while since anybody has posted here! Let me awaken this forum...

I have a situation where I want to connect my Sprint PPC-6700 (with WM5 Phone Edition) from my home through my work-supplied notebook PC, and from there to my corporate intranet and maybe also the Internet. This is primarily so I can test the corporate web site pages I design with my PPC's browsers. Why not just use WiFi or USB?

- USB cable connection doesn't work. I can sync up easily to my home PC and surf the Internet, but both my at-work desktop PC and my at-home work notebook PC return a never-ending "Retrieving settings" progress window that never finishes. So, no ActiveSync connections with my work PCs. I've attributed this to my Sprint BPCS Business Connection software that allows me to sync my PPC wirelesly over the Internet instead. Hmmm... maybe this should be the real question?

- WiFi doesn't seem to be capable of accessing the notebook directly, and the proprietary VPN and firewall used on our intranet isn't ported to PPCs so I can't just go in to work and connect to our WiFi there either. I'd have to either find a way to connect from my PPC to my home WiFi router, then back to the notebook (tried "\\mynotebooksname\" in browser without success), or find a way to make the notebook act like a WiFi router instead of as a client. I don't know of any way to do either.

So, I thought I could maybe use the IR ports to allow my PPC to connect via IR to my notebook then to my work intranet. But I haven't been able to figure that out either. I know that the PPC-6700 can act like a modem, accepting an IR connection from my notebook then to the Internet via Sprint's broadband wireless network, but how about the other direction? Any ideas???

TIA!

Did you try disabling Advanced Networking (if you have an AKU2 ROM)?http://www.smartphonemag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=everything_you_need_to_know_about_usb_ne&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

I appear not to have that AKU2 ROM. I certainly don't see "Enable advanced network functionality" or "USB to PC Applet" in my Connections settings anyway.

Still not sure why I can sync to my home PC (which has Norton Firewall) while both my work PCs (with Windows Firewall turned off) don't sync. Only other difference I know of is that my work PCs use XP Pro, but that didn't stop my previous PPC (iPAQ hx2415) from syncing with them. Puzzling.

Hey, I think I have a fix! Got it from the mobilitysite.com website:

I uninstalled, completely, Sygate Security Agent. It's not a firewall, but was interfering. Disabling it wasn't enough, I had to uninstall it. Windows Firewall is still installed, but turned off. So, if any of you ever encounter this problem you might want to look into uninstalling, or at least turning off, any firewalls or other network monitoring apps you have installed.

Still wondering if it's possible to do the PPC > IR > PC > Internet thing though...
