Never owned a cellphone. Am thinking about it. Using my pa-in-law's Nokia 6015 the past few days...not sure I like being able to be found by my wife 24/7.
His phone, a Nokia 6015 is pretty limited. I can't even sync it to my desktop to transfer numbers and pictures to and from my laptop, though I have the DKU-5 cable and the Nokia Suite software. I think this may be due to it possibly being locked by CellularSouth...not sure. Haven't been able to figure out how to unlock and really don't know if that is an ok (spelled legal) thing to do.
I think if I get a cellphone, it will be a smartphone. So here are my questions: Are smartphones locked as well? And if so, will it inhibit my ability to configure it the way I want...will I be able to synch it with my laptop?
I would have to go with Sprint/Nextel as that is my area of coverage up in Michigan...they use GSM services rather than CDMA from what I can interpret...
Any noob suggestions for me or precautions I should take?

Ebay has several sellers that offer unlocked phones. Research the sellers, mainly through their buyer's feedback, and you should be able to get what you want. Just make sure it is the right network type.
As for which phone to get, I recommend making a list of functions you would like the phone to perform. Once you make the list, research the available devices to find the one that does what you want. Also, get feedback on what users think of the device. I recommend taking time to do the research because I have had friends and family buy a device, learn about its capabilities, and limitations, then wish they had bought something different.

Actually I had long forgotten this post...since then I found out the phone was not locked, it is just that I was using the wrong usb cable. I got the right one, and was able to install software, transfer data files, and do a complete backup of his phone just fine.
I still haven't taken the jump yet...not sure I like the idea of my wife being able to find me 24/7....
