"Unable to establish connection" on HP 690

I have a HP 690 with a Lucent WaveLan card. It works great except when I use my WiFi card I can get Yahoo, but when I try to get my Yahoo mail or MSN's Hotmail I get, "Unable to extablish secure connection." I get the same message on several other sites. When I google that error message the advice is to get an upgrade for the browser. I have the Internet Explore that came bundled with the 690. Can I do that? Should I get another browser? Try a diferent email host? I tried Canoe and a ew otheres and they don't work. Any help will be very appreciated. It woud be nice to be able to get email.

You need the 128-bit SSL update for H/PC Pro:

It's in the middle of the list of downloads on that page.

A bit of a selfish answer... : which software/driver/settings are you using? I cannot get the wafelan card working on my HP 680 ...

Thanks.

I don't have a 690, though I used to have a 680 that's gone on to H/PC heaven. Use the Agere reference driver for CE 2.11:

http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/h/0031.asp

Look inside the ZIP package for another ZIP file called "Inflated.zip" and extract that. Inside you'll find a CAB file named "wireless.10003.CAB," which is the SH3 version that you need for the 690. It will install an "Agere Client" applet on the 690 that will allow you to scan for available networks, so that you can set your home network as part of the default profile.

Thanks for the quick reply and clear instructions! Found it... but now a bit of a "stupid" question: What do I do with that file? (Sorry, am not that much of a computer "Geek" ;) )

PS. Got it... just copy the file onto the Jornada and double click it... even I can do that :D

PS2. But if I open the program it says: :"Driver Not Loaded"... re-installed it, but still... :(

Don't panic. That's probably just the device waiting for DHCP to assign an IP address. (Open "Network" in the Control Panel and select "Agere Wireless Network Card" to verify that DHCP is enabled. If it isn't, select that option, tap OK, and then remove and re-insert the card, then wait a minute or so to see if it connects. If it still doesn't, try soft resetting the device and then inserting the card again.) If DHCP is not enabled, then you have to manually enter the IP address, which is much more tedious.

Let us know if you have any luck with this.

Cool! Thanks - again - for the fast reply! Much appreciated.

Unfortunately: no go...

Some things I notice:
- in the Control Panel I can still only see the "WaveLAN" icon (no "Agere"...?)
- When I open "Network" I see two "Agere Wireless Network Driver"-s (H1) & (H2)
- When I open the "Agere Client" it only stays open for a couple of seconds, and then shuts down...

Are there other things I should be paying attention to/info that would help...?

Look for another icon in the Control Panel that says "Wireless Network." That is the Agere applet in the Control Panel. If it's there, open it and select "Edit Wireless Profiles." On the next page that appears, tap "Next" and you will see a box with a list of networks. It'll be empty, but tap on "Scan" and it'll show you what networks are detected. If you see your network listed, select it and then tap "Next" on that page and subsequent pages until you see a button labeled "Finish." Tap on that and then watch the signal strength symbol on the taskbar until you see one or more of the five bars turn solid green. Then try opening a Web page in IE.

And again superfast, thanks!

This is what I do: Start > Settings > Control Panel
But then I do not see "Wireless Network". There is only "Network". Then I see two "Agere Wireless Network Driver"-s: (H1) & (H2)... When I open one of them I have two tabs: IP Adress (set at DHCP) and "Name Servers".

...?

Then the driver I linked above hasn't installed properly. Try uninstalling it (using "Remove Programs") before reinstalling it using the CAB file linked above.

Tried it... it's the same... but... do you know which driver name has to be entered when I insert the card? I have always just hit enter with the name "Network card in Socket 1"...

Thanks for this "almost-real-time" help, really appreciate it!

PS. BTW, when I install the Compaq WL100 driver and set it up I get the message: "DHCP was unable to obtain an IP address. You can reinsert your card later or statically assign an address."

Okay, I'm now officially confused. You referenced the WaveLAN card before, but now you're talking about the WL-100? The latter is a Prism-based card rather than an Agere-based one (like the WL-110). The standard driver name is prismnds for Prism-based cards. For the WaveLAN, since you've installed the standard Agere driver for H/PC Pro, the driver name for that is wlags46. In any event, it's clear now why you couldn't connect. [:p]

Indeed, I have a generic card (I ripped from my old "wireless" router) and I mistakenly had identified it as the Agere-based card. I succeeded to connect once with the WL-100 software, but never could replicate that... since than I only get the message "DHCP was unable to obtain an IP address. You can reinsert your card later or statically assign an address."

I typed WL100NDS.dll as the driver name, but can not change this... tried reinstalling, and deleting the file manually but the device only looks for WL100NDS.dll... ?!?

Sorry for the confusion, my fault. At least thanks for the responses, I have made more progress in the last couple of days than I made on my own before. I hope you can help me with this chipset too, but if not at least thanks for the effort you put into this until now.

Try uninstalling the Compaq driver and then installing the Prism reference (generic) driver:

http://www.hpcfactor.com/ftp-root/drivers/wifi-reference/intersil/prism-2-5/CE211-3/1.07.24.1025/1-07-24-1025_WinCE211-30.zip

Then type in prismnds when the 680 asks for the driver name. (As I recall, the driver name you entered for the WL-100 is correct for Compaq's specific version of the Prism driver; however, I understand that several users have had difficulty with that version on H/PC Pro [CE 2.11] devices, as opposed to H/PC 2000 [CE 3] devices.)

Thanks again, but I'm having difficulty with it too :(

When installing MS Activesync says that the software is not compatible with the device...

Just copy the CAB file for CE 2.11 SH3 over to the 680 and double-tap on it on the 680 to install the driver.

Tried all four SHx files (I know for certain the Jornada 680 has got the SH3 processor, but I do not know whether it's a: HPC200; HPC211; PPC211; or, PPC300) but all four resulted in the same message:

"The application cannot run on this device type. Please install the application specific to this device type."

... :S
