A simple CHEAP solution for some.

We looked at all the options and have a kind of free stop-gap solution. We forward of e-mail to the text capable cell phones. Sure you only get the 1st 160 Charactors, but you get the titel and know if the e-mail requires rapid responce.

We can forward the e-mail and even respond with short messages.

The Cost ZERO.

A cheap solution as you said, but I would think that, with cell phone plans the way they are, you could probably get a batchload of Thera's on your current plan and replace your existing cell phone complement and have a much more robust environment.

We buy blocks of 3,500 minuets for $35 to cover our overages, and have unlimited text messaging for $5 per head. Not to bad really.

I've been trying to figure out on what forums I've seen your sig line. I know I've seen it around somewhere. [:D]

Anyway, had you considered Blackberry?

We outsource our DP service to a company named Center-Beam, the Blackberry required $5-$10K of additional software. We are mid size firm, so this is a lot to spend for a few hundred people.

We can use a Windows Mobile based device for free, just remotely sync with the server, or a smart phone and "good-link" for minimal cost.

There are some real eloquent solutions out there, but they cost money, and what do they do that we cannot do with simpler solutions?

A good old com-cube cable for $40 is cheaper, and a AXIM PDA is cheaper then the $500 for a PDA phone combo, more flexible, easier to teach to use, and modular so we can upgrade one part when it becomes obsolete. Plus I have a better phone. The combined phone PDA/Blackberries suck for use as a phone.

Yeah, we've tested the Blacberry/Cell phone at work. Very uncomfortable to use.

TigerDirect recently had Thera's on for $149. Of course they're only 32/32 and PPC2k2. [:(]

We looked at the Thera's too. e-bay had a slew of them availabel also.

I've said this before, but if someone made a two piece package Callpphone and pda all ready to plug in to each other my life would be simplier. No one listens to people like me who are users, they just invent stuff that they think is cool, and hope to sell it.

Years ago I had a old motorola wings pager, it also got my e-mail interfased with Lotus Notes and did EVERYTHING I now need a Blackberry for, at what? a 1/5 the cost?

Motorola missed the boat by NOT pushing the business side of the equation, not it is a dead issue.
