Does It Exist? Infrared Port, Smartphone, Windows Mobile, Touchscreen, Large Screen

As a Realtor, I need a device onto which I can load my lockbox software.
It uses the IR port to unlock lockboxes on houses I show. I’d like totrade up from my old dumb cellphone, to one with the IR port andMLS-software capable. That way, I do not have to carry a separate lockboxdevice. My quandary is that the 8525 is not the current PC Slider model, and is in short supply. The replacement product is the 8925 Tilt, but ithas NO IR port.
What cellphone has the IR port, the large screen and keyboard of a slider,Windows Mobile OS, and runs on AT&T network? I’ve found no productcomparison chart on your website nor anyone else’s, which makes it easyto find what I need. Thanks for your help.

r.

Rick,

You can buy unlocked 8525's online on ebay for a pretty good price. You should be able to simply put your SIM card in it and be ready to go...that is the way I bought my 8525.

I use an application called NoviiRemote which is a programmable IR remote program. I can program several remote controls into it and all I have to do is simply point the original device at it and once the device is in setup mode, press the appropriate button to set it up. It may do the trick for you.

I am not sure why they dropped the IR port in the 8925. I use an IR keyboard for my device and that is one of the reasons I have been reluctant to uprade.

Dale,

Thanks for your response. Since neither generation of the I-Phone have an IR port, I have some questions for you?

1. What are the most used cellphone applications which require an IR port?

2. Are applications moving to some other port for local signaling?

Rick

Classically, on PDAs of years past, the IR port was primarily used to exchange electronic "business cards." Basically, they beamed contact information from one device to another. Additionally, people could beam files to one another, such as Word docs, presentations or other files. That type of info exchange has been replaced in large by Buetooth connectivity. With bluetooth one can connect to other devices, other PCs or any compatible bluetooth devices.

Unfortunately, if you do plan to stick with Windows Mobile (with some other OS'es, particulaely with Symbian, the situation is far better), you only have older devices to choose from; for example, the HTC Universal.
