So i have a archos MiniHD 30Go+ipaq 3970+ pcmcia adaptator for ipaq and it dosen't work with any driver which i have tested on my ipaq, as tjotala.com but i have modified my register and it works now !! So someone can test my solution : (switch off all SD card and CF) With PHM device manager, click in the part "disk drive", your drive will be appared with the name "standart Disk Drive", double click on, and in the case Plug and play ID quote the name in a paper for exemple. Now with the program Resco Registery you will modified your register. In your register go to "HKEY_Local machine" else "drivers" else "PCMCIA" else "ATADisk" in Atadisk, click on dll and change the value "atadisk.dll" to "exdrive.dll" else do the same to "ATADisk2". Now you have modified PCMCIA, select all file in "ATADisk" or "ATADisk2" and go to the name of your "plug and play id" and paste all in the directory. Now restart your pocket and try it, it does work on mine. If someone whant picture i can do that. Bye bye :) A french pocket user !

FXmartin,
thanks a lot, it does work, in my case I didn't even rename ATADISK.DLL to EXDRIVE.DLL, all I did was paste the iClass registry entry from the ATADISK category into the entry that represented my HD (in my case EXP___-PnPIDE) and that did the trick, the disk now appears as "Mounted Volume" in File Explorer.

Could you explain, in detail, how you did this?
I have a similar set up, using an EXP HD TravelerE. I am using resco registry editor, but I'm not very experienced at editing registry settings.

Great job fxmartin and fontana. I have a iPAQ 3955 WM 2003 and an older Mountain solutions ABS/PCMCIA. The ABS worked very well with my notebook Windows 2000. Using the card probe program from
http://www.tjotala.com/hardware/storagebrick/default.htm
which can be found in the FAQs I was able to get the device name off the PCMCIA card. Using your registry hack - coping the iClass from ATADISK to my drives entry. Many thanks to both of you.
cthomson
I can't find my device in the registry, when its plugged in. I refreshed the view, but dont see anything different.

Fantastic piece of information. If I may I will explain in simple terms what I did which now allows me to use PPC2003 with my PCMCIA hard drives. It follows what you said but a little more simply for less experienced users:-
1. first install 'exdrive.exe` onto your Pocket PC, available from
http://www.tjotala.com/software/wince/storagebrickdriver/
2. Use a Registry editor (I used Resco) on the PPC,
Open the following:-
HKEY_Local_Machine / Drivers / PCMCIA / ATADISK
Change the following entry `atadisk.dll` to `exdrive.dll`
Do not worry about the warning message.
Do exactly the same re.
HKEY_Local_Machine / Drivers / PCMCIA / ATADISK2
3. In either of the above entries copy the `iClass registry entry`
4. Look in ALL the folders in the PCMCIA section of the Registry.
If ANY of them show the 'exdrive.dll' then PASTE the 'iClass
registry entry into that section. There will be several sections
containing the 'exdrive.dll'. These are the entries which control
the different types of ATA hard drives that are recognised by
PPC2003. By pasting into each entry you will ensure that if you
have a compatible hard drive attached to your PCMCIA card it will
be recognised.
5. Perform a reset of the PPC, and your drive will appear in File
Explorer, providong it is compatible.
AS AN ADDITIONAL BONUS
I also have a PPC running PocketPC 2002. Using the `exdrive` driver it used to recognise one of my PMCIA hard drives, but ignored the other.
The Registry entries are different in 2002, but I found that if I
just changed the .dll as above in
HKEY_Local_Machine / Drivers / PCMCIA / ATADISK
and
HKEY_Local_Machine / Drivers / PCMCIA / ATADISK2
from `atadisk.dll` to `exdrive.dll`
then both drives were recognised. No other Registry modifications were needed.

Thank you so much, marlbrook! I finally got it to work on my 5550. This is just too damn cool. AWESOME. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

OK, I'm still happy that I got this thing to work, but now I have a different problem. I hope someone here can help.
My storage brick works fine with my 5550 in a PC card expansion pack, but I can't get it to work with a CF to PC card adapter in my CF sleeve. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using a dual CF sleeve from PI.
The main reason I want to do this, is because I have a bunch of my DVD's that I've converted using DVD to PPC, and I would like to run them off my storage brick, while in the car, but using the other CF slot ( on my dual CF sleeve ) to output the video (using my voyager VGA card) to my daughter's portable DVD player.
I know I know, some of you are saying, "WHY?" well, It would be nice to have 100 movies to choose from without bringing my whole DVD collection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to here from someone who is using a CF to PC card adapter, and how they got it to work. I can't even see anything different in my registry settings, when I plug my ipaq in to the dual CF sleeve. If I plug a CF card in to the sleeve, a different setting shows up in the registry, but not when I plug the CF to PC card adapter.

Wow!!!
I think I'm finally getting this down to a real solution!
Thanks to all of you (Yes, even the French!!!) ;--)
A little more help and I should be good to go.
Here's my Use Case:
I have a Canon Digital Rebel that uses CF cards.
I have an IPAQ 5555 (Windows Mobile 2003) that has an SD Slot.
I want to be able to transfer my pictures off of the CF card and onto a storage device.
I have seen a list of items I need to use a PCMCIA drive.
It includes:
- IPAQ 5555 (I have this already)
- Dual PC Card Expansion slot
- PCMCIA HDD
- CF Card
With these parts and your clever registry tweaks, I ought to be able to use my IPAQ to view my pix and transfer them to the PCMCIA HDD.
Here's my question:
If this is my only use case, is there any reason why I would need any other equipment? I mean, the PCMCIA HDD will work in the PC Card Expansion slot, right?
Thanks for reading!

can the registry be hacked enable a ipaq to usb connection to work for use with usb hard drives instead of pcmcia card to hard drive connection?

There is nothing that can be done via software to make a USB device port into a USB host port which is required to connect a USB mass storage device to. Some PDA's like the Toshiba's did come with a USB host adapter add-on but this is not common. Use one of these instead.http://www.zling.us/products.asp?cat=52

Thanks for the reply. My reasoning for askin is because I have an Archo Jukebox recorder 20gb which has a USB connector. I whas hopeing to connect my Ipaq to access my mp3's and movies as well as for storage. If I use a USB PCMCIA card and the expansion sleeve for the my Ipaq would I be able to connect Ipaq to Archos drive? Thanks again.

The answer as far as I know is NO. Nothing is definitive in the world of computers. Someone resourceful may have come up with a way though. Make google.com your friend. In the end it is still cheaper and easier to go the route of my original suggestion. Unless you already have all the additional pieces but you have not stated that you do already. ;-)

Thanks again for your insight. I am planning on getting the pcmcia expanison sleeve for my Ipaq and at that point will try the usb card. If this does not work I will go the route as suggested in making a "storage brick" which I will be sure works.
link to storage brik as some may not remember the link.

Thanks again for your help. I plan on getting the pmcia sleeve off ebay and the pcmcia card as well. Ultimately I can build the "storage brick". I was just hopeing that since I already have the archos JB/HD and my Ipaq I could just use a pcmcia usb card to attach the two.
Storage brick link incase anyone forgot

Why? What happens, or doesn't happen? The 3870 slides into the expansion pack from the top, downward.

Hello I'm using a HP3870 With Pocket PC 2003 and a Assonics Exdrive, I followed the full procedure but couldn’t get it to work.
The pocket pc appears to recnognize the external drive, since de green light is on in the exdrive, but I cannot see anything in the file explorer.
Inside the exdrive is a 60Gb disk formatted as NTFS.
Could that be the problem?, where should I look to see the files in the file explorer.
marlbrook
In addition to my previous post, I discovered that particularly with PocketPC 2002 it is necessary to ensure your hard drive is a Primary (not extended) partition, and formatted as FAT32.
If your drive is not a 'primary', each time you connect you will be asked if you want to format it. So if your drive already has data on it, and has no primary partition you need to use Partition Magic to convert it.
If all is well under PPC2002 your drive will show up as 'Storage Drive' in File Manager, and as 'Mounted Volume' under PPC2003

Wow!
Thank you for this.
I have been searching for a while (yes I realize this thread is 2 years old!).
I have a 3950 that refused to read a 2 gig microdrive. Now it can!
The unfortunate thing - the exdrive.dll will "break" reading other CF cards including an SD to CF adapter that I have.
So I wrote a little Mortscript that allows me to switch drivers very easily.
It so cool to have a fix for this problem. I never understood why my 3950 on WM2002 and even my 3150 could read the microdrive but when I upgraded to WM2003 it just wouldn't show up.
Question: Is there any way to grab the old atadisk.dll driver from WM2002? That seems to be able to read both the microdrive and the CF to SD adapter without any problems.
