ROM upgrade help (HTC S710)

Is there any place where I can get detailed instructions on what to do or not to do when giving my HTC S710 a ROM upgrade?  It will be my first upgrade, and I don't have a clue as to what may go wrong!  Would also like to know if anyone has tried doing a full backup with Sprite 6.2.2 before the ROM upgrade, and then a full restore.  Many thanks for any help!

Hi Sylvia,

Here are some recommendations that should help you perform the upgrade without any issues:

  1. Backup your data using a backup software like Sprite or use Activesync/WMDC to sync your Outlook Mobile data to your computer. I assume you save your documents to your Storage card on your device. So you should not worry about those.

  2. Close all running applications on your device. I suggest you restart your device to kill all running process in memory.

  3. Make sure your battery is fully charged.  Your device won't charge during the upgrade.

  4. Connect your device to your PC via USB.

  5. Start the upgrade and do not in any case disconnect your device.

Many thanks, Linley!  Will cross my fingers and see how it goes.  ;-)

You're welcome, Sylvia. I trust things will go well. However, if you come across any issues, feel free to post back here for assistance. BTW, after you click to run setup, follow the instructions on the screen. They'll be somehow similar to mine. Good luck.

Hi again, Linley!  Followed instructions (backup, upgrade, restore), and everything seemed to work (phone OK, Internet OK, programs OK) ... but now have new questions:

1) In Settings>Device Information, Radio version is now different (4.1.13.54_03.10.90), but ROM version is same as before (1.15.405.2); is that normal or did something go wrong?

2) In Settings>Windows Update I select Check Now and still get "Connection to update server was not available"; isn't it supposed to work after the ROM upgrade?

3) Wi-Fi connects OK, but when I try to use it for the Internet or to pick up my e-mail, it says "Cannot connect to the incoming mail server" (though e-mail settings are exactly the same as before the upgrade, and used to work fine); any clues?

Sorry to be a pain, but don't know who else to bother!  ;-)

Linley, please ignore question 3.  Kept on fiddling and (don't ask me how!) finally got it to work!

Hi Sylvia,

Glad to learn that you had a smooth an successful upgrade.

1) Where did you get the upgrade from?

2) I do not have much info about Windows Update except that sometime get the same error and at other times, it will say that there is no update for your device...

;)

Hi again, Linley!  Downloaded the ROM upgrade file (WWE 1.34.405.1) from the HTC e-club page (where I had registered my S710 when I bought it), so there is no doubt that it is the correct one for my device.  The weird thing is that, after the "successful" upgrade (with no error messages), a few details changed (for example, I now have a Connection Setup icon, which I didn't have before) but the display is the same as previously and Device Information says ROM version is still 1.15.405.2.  Sent a message about this to HTC support, but no reply yet.

Sylvia,

The upgrade you installed does not upgrade the OS. It just adds a missing functionality to your device. In your case it's the Network wizard. There is no OS upgrade for your device as you've seen on the download page for your phone.

Linley, evidently what got installed was the Network Settings Wizards, but I did not download that file, which appears under My Download>Drivers and Applications in the HTC e-club page.  What I did download (from My Download>Device Updates in the same page) and installed is the Operating System [ROM] Update (the file, 49,615 KB, is RUU_Vox_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.1_4.1.13.54_03.10.90_Ship.exe, and I still have it in my PC).  I understand it includes the Network Settings Wizards, but why it only installed that remains a mystery (there was no warning, or error message, before, during, or after the installation).  Anyway, many thanks for your help and time, and best regards.

Strage. Could you also check the version BEFORE restoring your old backup? I think the ROM version is stored somewhere in the Registry and is overwritten by the backup file.

The ROM version should be the new one: I've double-checked this on my Vox.

BTW, can you see the new ROM contents; most importantly, the new Office Mobile? See http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/blogs/3/htc_vox_s710_orange_spv_e650_etc_rom_upd for further info. If you can, then, everything is OK and you shouldn't bother.

Hi, Werner, and thanks for your help!  I have the Connection Setup icon in the Start menu,  Windows Live is version 10.6.0033.0600, Word Mobile and Excel Mobile are version 6.1 ... but HKLM\Software\OEM\ROM\Version says 1.15.405.2!!  ;-)  I did not check the ROM version before restoring my old backup (after the ROM update), so maybe that explains the problem (if the Registry was overwritten by the backup file).  In any case, everything seems to be working fine, except Windows Update (which still tells me that "connection to update server was not available", but maybe that is normal if there is no official update available).  So I will follow your advice, and stop worrying about the ROM number!  ;-)  Best regards (and many thanks for your interesting and helpful postings!),   Sylvia

Yup, it must have been a Registry overwriting issue.
