It's been many months since I last posted here (heck when did the forum start to look like this!!)...I downloaded some newsletters (thanks John!, always a good read), and noticed an 8/16/08 post by John asking if maybe the ride is over? Yeah, I'd say it has been for a while!!!
Except for the 4 or 5 diehards, the rest of us just moved along like everyone else, I guess. The ol' 900c is still used occasionally, but even overclocked, it's still slow for anything except typing on, and VERY light web surfing, and as we all know, just unusable in bright light. SO many tiny ultra light laptops & tablets have come out, the HPCs based on CE are just, well the XT's of the PC world (well maybe ATs..and if you have to ask, then you're too young)
My Blackberry just has connectivity everywhere (Verizon) and does 90% of what I NEED, versus what I'd like. Can't type much on Smartphones, but beats the heck out of any other device that has to also be a phone. Even my trusty 4 year old Axim X5 doesn't see too much use since Smartphones blazed onto the scene. Maybe if I was retired, I wouldn't see the need, but when my job revolves around instant emails, messaging and mobility, they are almost a must.
The thing about the HPC (for me) is once I got it working as I wanted, ..I just used it...once I got the software on it, I was done..since there is nothing new to add to it anyway that would add to the HPC experience....it is just "there"... it works like I wanted it to and does what it does. Now, it would be neat to figure out a way to tether a 900c to a BB, but I'd bet anything it's not possible because the of required BB USB drivers needed and NO one is going to write one for a dead Mobile platform.
It's sad, because most of the HPC enthusiasts were from a generation where you used things until they wore out, and insisted on getting value added for their purchase. So like the vintage audio buffs I post with that have, and still use & love Nakamichi cassette decks and spin vinyl on turntables, I'll still use my 900c because I paid a pretty penny for it and it still works like the day I bought it (actually better) and while it may not be worth anything to anyone else, I'll get my use out of it.
So to you all, but especially John, Rich, and cmonex , (and any others that may read this and you know who you are) I say : "Thanks for keeping the faith, and this platform alive as long as you did. It was a priviledge and honor to post with you guys (and gal) ". I still love Rich's site and download stuff from it, so hopefully, he won't shut it down too soon!
And I'm sure you all have discussed it but, in case you haven't, wouldn't a smartphone with a folding keyboard (like I have for my X5, just a really fantastic design,) be just about the perfect HPC?? Surf, take calls, really write emails & documents, etc, etc...yep...truly the HPC was a design way before its time....
Take care..Perry
