hx 4700 Backup Battery

I've had my hx 4700 for about 4 years and use it all the time. The backup battery has gone dead and I can't find anybody who has one. Can anybody provide a source for a 1.2 Volt 6 mAh Ni-MH Varta V6 HR button cell backup battery?

Thanks,

emike

Check www.atbatt.com for a compatible battery. They carry a Varta 1.2V NiMH button battery which may match what you need.

Thanks YankeeJeep.

I appreciate your help.

I also assume eMike that you are using the older OS and not WM5 with the non-volitile flash rom where a backup battery is no longer a necessity...

Rich,

Yes, I am using the original OS WM3SE. From some of the stuff I read, a lot of people liked the way the WM3 worked better than WM5. I understand that there is a new OS out now that had some bugs but a patch is available to fix them. What I have works great, but I would probably upgrade to the current OS with patch if it is a big improvement. If I went to the newest OS, would the programs that now work fine under WM3 still work without going through a lot of stuff to get them to work?

Thanks,

eMike

eMike, I don't have much of a software library, so when I upgraded my hx4700 to WM5, everything continued to work fine. And...luckily...the learning curve really wasn't any different for me...for all practical purposes, everything appears nearly the same. Nice thing is if you are not happy, it is simple enough to go back to what you had...and if you have a backup of your system now...then you are all set if you have to roll back the clock. I'm just glad not to have to worry about backup batteries or losing any info in the event of a total power failure.

Thanks Rich. I appreciate the info. I think I will upgrade. I didn't realize taking the step back to WM3SE would be so easy.

Werner has a blog entry that includes info on cooked WM6.1 ROMs for a number of devices that are not receiving official upgrades, among them the hx4700. You can check at http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/blogs/3/wm_6_1_upgrade_aamp_sdhc_compliance_repo

If you are considering WM5, you might as well think about 6.1.

Am I understanding this correct ? If I have a HP 4700 with the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition that it can be updated to WM 5 or even  WM6.1 ? And this would eliminate the function of the internal backup battery ? I sure would like to do this.

I am on my 4 th  pocket PC ( a 4700) .I started  in 2001  carrying one everywhere I go and I have no real interest in a phone so an update would be like a new pocket pc for me .

There have been WM5 ROMs released by HP for the 4700 series as well as a number of 'cooked' ROMs released by individual developers (which seem to be much more stable and functional than the official versions). A good source for cooked ROMs is xda-developers. You should be able to locate both WM5 and WM6 versions for the 4700.

One thing that the backup battery does is provide a trickle power flow to maintain the RAM during a battery swap. So using WM5 or WM6 without a functioning backup battery means you will want to let the RAM area get written to ROM storage before swapping batteries or the device will read from its last ROM image save to restore the RAM image. Not a big deal but it does take longer than just a suspend/swap batteries/power up. Think in terms of a soft reset rather than just a power-down/power-up cycle.
