Mobile Pro 790

I recently acquired a Mobile Pro 790 that I was planning on using for writing. I powered it up with a full charge, wrote some material and saved it to the device( and I know I know I should have backed it up on a card), powered down and it looks like in the meantime the battery went completely dead. I recharged it and when I turned it on much to my dismay I got the "setup your mobile pro" screen. It has happened every time the battery drains, its like it wipes its little board clean.
Is this pretty standard with the Mobile Pro ? or is there some setting I don't know about.... ?

Yes, it is normal if the backup battery is dead or you allow it sit idle for awhile. There is a button backup battery (Recharges when plugged in or has normal battery powered). This takes over to keep things in memory when the main goes dead for awhile and during battery changes.

There (I think) is a case for penlights if you are interested as well - there is for the 780 and I think they are the same - someone else will correct me if I errrrrrrrr :-) Ebay used to have lots of the regular batteries as well.

Sorry about your lost work, that is sickening to maddening. I always saved my work to a cf card and normally have a cf card in a pcmcia adapter to back that up to every now and then.

Newbiez,

The rechargeable LION backup battery that is internal to the 790 is only meant to maintain the memory for a short while until you either recharge or swap out the main battery with a full one.

However, all you need to do is save your files to the internal flash ram...you have 14.1 mb of usable storage. And in the event of a total power failure, those files will be retained, no matter what.

But like Exscentric says, saving to a CF card is even better, because then you have the ability to move your files around a lot easier between devices and desktops. The case for penlights he is speaking about is the AA battery adapter that sells for about $15 from Alancomputech.com. That gives you power without worrying about recharging...you just use AA batteries for about 4 hours of productivity time.

Sounds like you are going to have to replace your main battery!

You might want to consider keeping the 790 plugged into AC power (when possible) if you are going to write for extended periods of time......that's what I do when I'm writing a review or article for my newsletter. Of course if you don't have access to AC power, then just be aware that the average MP battery will drain after about 3- 3 1/2 hours of contineous use.

Thanks for the help, glad to get some info! Other than that little slip-up of User Error, these little Mobile Pros really rock for writing.

I used a 780 for writing for a long time, then moved to an 880 which I found better for scrolling and looking for things in my text. Gave up the 880 for an EEE by Asus with xp and MS Word the real thing. I found that the grammar/spell checker was nice, it makes me edit as I go rather than later on - which I really disliked :-)
