GPS

I just got an Ipaq 2795b and was told it had a build in GPS. If this is so, how do I go about using it? I was also told I didn't have to buy anything else.

I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but your Ipaq 2795b has NO built-in GPS, as you can read in the official product specs on HP's site: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12287_na/12287_na.HTML

But hey!! Don’t despair, you can still buy a good GPS Bluetooth receiver for under 50 bucks, I got a Globaltop G33 (51 Channels) a month ago and I’m one happy camper!!! ;)

Yup, no GPS in any past HP Pocket PC's.

First determine your needs (ie Driving, walking,geocaching ect) if your using a phone-hookup; Google mobile and several M/S programs are free.Get Google Earth for your PC (free,but,recmd. the $20 "option").Should you have a program already picked out, First make sure the reciever (you will have to buy one) will work with it. I have not used the above reciever (I recmd. Globalstat BT359w, works with almost all programs, I know of) $90. ebay (use one of the stores, stay away from older units)Most programs will only use 1hz,the above unit is 5hz, and a differant chipset, I believe (I have about 7 programs, that will use 1,5or10hz, all Survey grade and very trendy) Im sure there is a Navigation program to buy with this(will check out, later)Have used GPS a little (about 1984 on) the only easy thing about PPCs for me. I  will check back later, should you need more help.

Check out this GPS VIP How-to here . It goes into detail on GPS and where to get 3rd party GPS software. First it sounds like a bad deal not getting gps built-in, but as mentioned on another post it is fairly cheap to add-on and may improve the useability over built in GPS, for instance HP's new Ipaq Travel Companion has a GPS reciever built-in but takes a small eternity to find satellites as opposed to some 3rd party add-ons that are fast (5 seconds or less).

I recently bought the HTC x7501 ($899)++++

The builtin Gps is very weak. It takes a long time to connect and sometimes never. Using the unit with external receiver works lika a charm and is fast. Before buying a unit with built in Gps (TRY BEFORE YOU BUY)
